Upper GI Endoscopy

Overview

Upper GI Endoscopy, also known as Oesophago-Gastro-Duodenoscopy (OGD), is a diagnostic procedure used to view the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract which includes the esophagus, stomach, and the beginning of the small intestine (duodenum).

Purpose of the Procedure

  • Evaluate persistent upper abdominal pain or nausea
  • Identify ulcers, inflammation, or tumors
  • Investigate swallowing difficulties
  • Perform biopsy if required
  • Treat bleeding sources, remove polyps, or dilate narrowed areas

Preparation Required

  • Fasting for 6–8 hours before the procedure
  • Avoid certain medications (as advised by the doctor)
  • Inform the technician about any allergies or previous health conditions

Procedure Details

  • A flexible tube with a camera (endoscope) is inserted through the mouth
  • The entire procedure takes 10–15 minutes
  • Performed under local anesthesia or mild sedation

Post Procedure Care

  • Temporary sore throat may be experienced
  • Normal activities can usually be resumed the same day
  • Follow-up will be advised based on findings

  • Mild discomfort or bloating
  • Rare risks include bleeding, perforation, or adverse reaction to sedatives
